Proofreading
Proofreading is checking the final format or layout to correct any last errors. It includes checking for:
Minor errors like spelling and inconsistencies;
Accuracy in headers, captions, hyperlinks, etc.; and
Overall layout and design.
It could also include:
Checking content against a previous version;
Ensuring consistency in page numbers and references; and
Looking for deliberate alterations versus errors (e.g., writer/editor changes compared to programmer/designer/printer keying mistakes).
Note: proofreading is checking your work after editing, rather than a substitute for editing.
