Proofreading

Proofreading is checking the final format or layout to correct any last errors. It includes checking for:

  • Minor errors like spelling and inconsistencies;

  • Accuracy in headers, captions, hyperlinks, etc.; and

  • Overall layout and design.

It could also include:

  • Checking content against a previous version;

  • Ensuring consistency in page numbers and references; and

  • Looking for deliberate alterations versus errors (e.g., writer/editor changes compared to programmer/designer/printer keying mistakes).

Note: proofreading is checking your work after editing, rather than a substitute for editing.
